In the interview, Wibbeler speaks about investments by Bolder Industries in Maryville and at the former Pyrolyx plant.

German tire recycling organization AZuR reports that while car and truck tire are being produced, rainforests are being destroyed. Manufacturers require rubber, leading to the emergence of more natural rubber plantations at the expense of untouched forests. Although some alternatives exist, AZuR says, the tire industry remains entangled in opaque supply chains.

On November 26, 2020, the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) announced a new board member and a new board chair, following the resignation of Tony Mougios of Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. Dr. Antoine Sautenet of Michelin was elected as a Director to complete Mr. Mougios unexpired term and elected 2nd Vice-Chair of the Board. Maureen Kline of Pirelli moves into the role as Chair of the Board, Paul Downey of Pliteq becomes 1st Vice Chair and Matt Livigni of Continental Tire remains as Treasurer.

CSRC group's board has approved a partnership with Eco Infinic Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of SHEICO group, to invest in the recovered carbon black (rCB) business at the former site of Continental Carbon Company (CCC) Phenix plant. This joint venture aims to develop the North American market for recovered carbon black and commence production in 2026. According to CSRC, the new plant will be one of the largest in North America, with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons of rCB, 35,000 tons of tire pyrolysis oil (TPO), and 2,300 tons of steel wire. The joint venture will be 65% owned by Eco Infinic, with CSRC and CCC jointly holding 35%. Specifically, the capital contributions to the joint venture are as follows: CSRC will contribute USD 12,500,000 in cash for 21% of the shares; CCC will contribute assets worth USD 8,500,000 for 14% of the shares; and Eco Infinic will contribute USD 39,000,000 in cash for 65% of the shares.

With just under one month to go until Tire Technology Expo 2024 gets underway, the shortlisted nominations for this year’s Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence have been presented. The awards will take place during a drinks and canapes party at Tire Technology Expo on Tuesday March 19 at the Messe Hannover. The TIP plan created in 2005 is partly managed by Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin. Other big names, including Pirelli and Continental, are also involved in the initiative. In total, all the stakeholders represent over 60 percent of international tire producers who provide jobs for over 650,000 employees. To keep the project going, once in two years the CEOs meet in Geneva to hold talks.

Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) – a regulatory body responsible for end-of-life tire management – announced this April that Mercedes-Benz Australia has become newest contributor to TSA in a commitment to the responsible disposal of end-of-life tyres. Mercedes-Benz Australia has announced it will contribute a levy to Tyre Stewardship Australia based on all new vehicles sold in Australia. In addition, Mercedes-Benz Retailers across the country will be able to become accredited participants with the TSA, agreeing to work with accredited recyclers and collectors of end-of-life tyres. Claire Painter, Corporate Communications Manager, said Mercedes-Benz Australia was proud to demonstrate its commitment towards the sustainable management of end-of-life tyres in an initiative that took effect from January 1, 2021.

Smithers – a global leader in rubber, plastics and polymer testing and market reports – spoke with tires expert Howard Colvin, author of Smithers’ latest report The Future of Carbon Black vs. Silica in Tires to 2027, about the challenges facing the tire industry and expected developments. Howard Colvin has many years of experience in the tire industry with 22 years at Goodyear and 12 years with Cooper. At Cooper he worked in the Advanced Technology group and led Cooper’s consortium of academia, industry and government to develop a guayule concept tire. Howard is the 2021 Melvin Mooney Distinguished Technology award winner for exhibiting exceptional technical competency in rubber science and technology.
