Bridgestone Corporation (Bridgestone) announced that it has been selected for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World), a globally recognized sustainability index, for two years in a row and for the fifth time in total. In addition, the Company has been selected for the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index (DJSI Asia Pacific), which is comprised of companies located in the Asia Pacific region, for 14 consecutive years.

Valorpneu, the Portuguese management entity of the Integrated System for the Management of Used Tires in Portugal, celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year. Since the beginning of its activity in 2002, Valorpneu has managed a network of operators that collect, recover, and recycle end-of-life tires.

When end-of-life tires reach the end of their life cycle, they become hazardous for the environment and human health if they are dumped in landfills. Made of synthetic rubber, chemicals, and additives, these tires contaminate water and land, pose a high risk of fire, generate harmful gases when burned, and serve as breeding grounds for insect-borne epidemics. These concerns are particularly relevant in Mexico, where an estimated 32 million tires are discarded annually, equivalent to one tire per second. Unfortunately, only 12% of these tires are recycled, with the majority ending up in landfills.

The recent news from Continental – a prominent tire manufacturer – proves that the industry is expected to becoming more sustainable which, in turn, will affect tire recycling industry as well. In late June 2020, Continental received the Red Dot Design Award for Urban Taraxagum – bicycle tires made from dandelion rubber. Moreover, the tire manufacturer recently made a very positive announcement related to sustainability. Now that Claus Petschick heads new Sustainability department, sustainable management is expected to become an integral part of Continental’s “Vision 2030” strategy program. Besides, the company will continue engaging in consistent research and development of new technologies, alternative materials and environmentally friendly production processes in the tire sector.

At the Global Supplier Conference on October 16 and 17, 2023 in Toulouse, France, the premium tire manufacturer was honored with the coveted supplier award for its special achievements for a more sustainable society. The initiative Alliance Zukunft Reifen (AZuR) presents itself as a pioneer in tire circular economy at the heart of the "Circular Economy" theme at THE TIRE COLOGNE 2024. From June 4th to 6th, 2024, the international tire and wheel industry will gather at the fair in Cologne to showcase new developments in the field of tires and rims. This year, for the first time, there will be a dedicated section for the "Circular Economy" theme on the platform. 16 AZuR partners will inform visitors about all segments of sustainable tire circular economy at the joint stand in Hall 7.

The III Latin American Tire Recycling Conference, also known as JornadasReciclaje, represents an excellent opportunity to explore various alternatives in technologies, regulations, developments, and diverse solutions related to tire recycling in Latin America. The Latin American Society of Rubber Technology (SLTC) aims to be a driving force for technological, entrepreneurial, and management knowledge in the rubber industry. With over 6,000 members and 30 years of experience, SLTC is committed to the principles of the circular economy, sustainability, and rubber product recycling within the industry.

According to CBC News, Ontario’s Resource Productivity & Recovery Authority (RPRA), which oversees recycling in the province, may soon impose fines of $200,000 or more on the province's tire manufacturers. According to the agency, the five companies in Ontario that collect and recycle end-of-life tires are all not in compliance with provincial legislation. The orders allege that throughout the province, the industry is not providing enough sites that collect used tires.
