News: Tire Recycling & Pyrolysis

In his recent article, Patrick Buder, Sustainability Strategy Manager at Zeppelin Systems GmbH, explains the company's approach to sustainable end-of-life tire recycling. Zeppelin Systems has been working with the tire industry for over 40 years and aims to achieve efficient material handling and environmentally friendly operations through their solution architecture. They have developed a new process in collaboration with project partners from various industrial sectors to create high-quality recyclates that can be reintroduced into the material cycle.

When end-of-life tires reach the end of their life cycle, they become hazardous for the environment and human health if they are dumped in landfills. Made of synthetic rubber, chemicals, and additives, these tires contaminate water and land, pose a high risk of fire, generate harmful gases when burned, and serve as breeding grounds for insect-borne epidemics. These concerns are particularly relevant in Mexico, where an estimated 32 million tires are discarded annually, equivalent to one tire per second. Unfortunately, only 12% of these tires are recycled, with the majority ending up in landfills.

Contec recently made a ground-breaking announcement about a significant 10 million Euro investment in their tire recycling plant in Szczecin, Poland. This follow-up interview centers upon that announcement.

Carlton Forest Renewables announced a partnership with Australian Triskel. In a venture created to support the Australian market with its ban on the export of end-of-life tires (ELTs), Triskel will act as an agent for Carlton Forest Renewables in the ANZ and Pacific Islands region, showcasing the technology that is on offer and the positive impact it has on dealing with ELTs. “We are very happy to have secured the deal with the Carlton Forest team and to be working with them as we seek new ways of dealing with ELTs in Australia,” said Virginie Senbel-Lynch, Managing Director of Triskel. “The vision and entrepreneurship displayed by CEO Mark Pepper and his team is incredibly impressive and represents a real game-changer in the way ELTs are recovered and processed across the globe.”

The Chairman of Scandinavian Enviro Systems AB (publ) (Enviro), Alf Blomqvist, and the company’s CEO, Thomas Sörensson, have been appointed to represent Enviro on the board of the new joint venture. The joint venture’s first board meeting was held on June 1, 2023. The joint venture was formed by Enviro and Antin Infrastructure Partners to establish a large-scale tire recycling company based on Enviro’s technology. As previously announced, the joint venture is planning to establish plants across Europe by 2030 with a total recycling capacity of one million tons of end-of-life tires per year.

The 2009/28/EC directive, officially known as the "Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources," is a significant European Union directive adopted on April 23, 2009. It has the primary goal of fostering the utilization of renewable energy sources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the European Union, and decreasing reliance on energy imports. Each member state is required to adhere to specific targets for the share of renewable energy in their overall energy consumption. In 2018, the directive was revised and updated through the Renewable Energy Directive 2018 (2018/2001). It solidified the binding national targets for renewable energy in gross final energy consumption and established a unified framework for promoting energy from renewable sources. This framework includes the implementation of support schemes, guarantees of origin, and streamlined administrative procedures.
