Utilizing recycled rubber crumb in the production of road surfaces and related products is contributing to South Africa's efforts toward a circular economy, where waste materials are repurposed for critical infrastructure needs. Dr. Mehran Zarrebini, CEO of Mathe Group, a radial truck tire recycler in Hammarsdale, notes that their factory processes about 1,000 radial truck tires per day, resulting in approximately 45 tons of rubber crumb.

The results are in from the world’s first full-scale test of concrete road safety barriers constructed with rubber crumb from end-of-life tires; and a new, innovative Australian public safety product has passed the ‘crash test’ and is now on track to go to market. Acording to the recent case study by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA)., Rubber T-Lok – a new generation of safety barriers made from tire-derived materials (TDM) – offering enhanced safety benefits, a longer life span and cost-effective solutions for a variety of industries. An innovative use of tire derived material that will enhance public safety and support the recovery of end-of-life tires in Australia – 1 kilometre of T-Lok barriers uses 12 tonnes of recycled rubber which is the equivalent of 2,000 passenger tires, and it is projected the product could use up to 60,000 (360 tonnes) passenger tires per year.

REVYRE Global Ltd New Zealand and XTYRE Global Pty Ltd, South Africa, have formed a license agreement in order to produce rubber molded products made from recycled end-of-life tires in Oceania. The New Zealand-based company REVYRE works to identify and invest in cutting-edge sustainable technologies that have a sound positive impact on the environment. In order to develop rubber crumb upcycling processing plants using proprietary technologies in specific territories, REVYRE is currently finalizing a number of exclusive license agreements. Functionally modified polymers for bitumen and the reprocessing of crumb rubber for molded products are REVYRE's two primary manufacturing focus areas.

Royal Mat has been welcomed as a new member of the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC). Royal Mat is based in Beauceville, Quebec, and produces rubber crumb and a range of rubber surfaces. TRAC President and CEO Carol Hochu states, "We are thrilled to have Royal Mat join our Association. In Kuwait, the Salmi tire stockpile is referred to as a constant source of fires and air pollution. As part of efforts to reduce and promote the end-of-life tire recycling in Kuwait, the Green Rubber Recycling company, which was established in 2013, creates a variety of products which utilize recycled tire rubber. Kuwait Times recently published an article about the Green Rubber Recycling highlighting company’s achievements. “Located in Amghara area, about 30 kilometers from Kuwait City, the tire recycling factory makes 100% recycled rubber tiling in brick or tile format for all types of locations including children’s play places, gyms, sports arenas as well as filling for gardens, farms and elsewhere,” the magazine writes.
