On International Recycling Day, May 17, Continental reiterated its commitment to achieving full carbon neutrality by 2050 and becoming the leading tire company in sustainability. Continental has long been reducing its reliance on fossil fuels, promoting the circular economy, and cutting emissions. Their Tires Vision 2030 sets ambitious targets: 60% sustainable materials in their products, 20% waste reduction, a 95% recycling rate, and a 20% decrease in energy and water consumption.

After a successful funding round of 15 million EUR in 2023, Contec S.A. takes the next step in its expansion plans by onboarding Wojciech Paruzel as Chief Operations Officer. Wojciech Paruzel is an electrical engineer and a Wrocław University of Science and Technology graduate with an MBA in Business Management. His career spans over 25 years, with experience in the construction, automotive, and technology industries. He was previously the COO of the J.S. Hamilton Group, where he improved operational efficiency with selected strategies across Central and Eastern Europe.

Globally, over one billion tires become unusable yearly, presenting a valuable resource for the circular economy. Efforts to manage end-of-life tires (ELTs) are underway, with various stakeholders collaborating to improve recycling rates and reduce tire dumping. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Tire Industry Project (TIP) has facilitated workshops to foster cooperation among stakeholders in regions such as the US, Europe, and China. While progress has been made in ELT recycling rates, challenges remain, including policy inconsistencies and inadequate market reporting.

In Australia, the Victorian Minister for Jobs & Industry has announced businesses which have been awarded grants under the $15 million Made in Victoria Industry R&D Infrastructure Fund to expand manufacturers’ R&D capability.

On April 25, Brussels and Beijing have agreed on a joint roadmap for greater collaboration on the vital issue. The new blueprint defines the actions that both the EU and China will take to implement under the EU-China Memorandum of Understanding on the circular economy. The specific actions outlined in the roadmap focus on plastics, including the ongoing negotiations for a global plastics treaty, battery value chains and remanufacturing.

As per the recent EuRIC's press release, the Council's adoption of the revised waste shipment rules marks a significant step towards modernizing intra-EU waste shipments rules and tackling illegal shipments. EuRIC welcomes the updated rules facilitating intra-EU waste shipments with the explicit goal of achieving a circular economy, and clarifying that unintentional administrative errors do not render a whole shipment illegal.

Utilizing recycled rubber crumb in the production of road surfaces and related products is contributing to South Africa's efforts toward a circular economy, where waste materials are repurposed for critical infrastructure needs. Dr. Mehran Zarrebini, CEO of Mathe Group, a radial truck tire recycler in Hammarsdale, notes that their factory processes about 1,000 radial truck tires per day, resulting in approximately 45 tons of rubber crumb.
