One of many applications of fuel oil derived from scrap tires by means of pyrolysis is marine fuel. Tire pyrolysis operators, therefore, should be aware of changes in regulations introduced to maritime transportation. The main issue here is sulphur content which is usually rather high in tire pyrolysis oil. Starting next year IMO 2020 global regulation cap, will require all naval vessels to use fuel that contains sulphur of no more than 0.5%. This is set by Regulation 14.1.3, MARPOL Annex VI.

China’s Henan Province now has a tire recycling facility with an annual processing capacity of 100,000 tons of tires – it can recycle scrap tires and not pollute the environment – this move helps the Asian country reinforce the sustainable trends in economy. The new facility developed by Chinese tire-producer Doublestar Group and ten universities, with Southeast University leading the research, is located in Runan County and is aimed at fighting problems that come from environmental pollution as the Chinese tire recycling system, reportedly, has long been associated with pollution.

To handle waste such as scrap tires, sometimes one may want to seek an alternative to recycling – tire pyrolysis. This process involves decomposing of car tires by incinerating them at a high temperature at the same time removing oxygen. Via this method, it is possible to obtain gas, oil and alternative charcoal known as biochar or recovered carbon black (rCB) – the recycled materials will be applied to produce new goods and generate energy.

Recovered Carbon Black – an event organized by a global leader in rubber, plastics and polymer testing and market reports Smithers Rapra – has been designed as a forum for experts and innovators, who research, develop and commercialize recovered carbon black (rCB). The event is scheduled for May 21-22, 2019 and will take place in Berlin, Germany.

The researchers are expected to keep on conducting the project to make sure the results are verified so the product that has pyrolysis oil and used as fuel is ready for commercialization. One of the objectives of the initiative is to reduce consumption of fossil oil. And to attain it, Sandström said that it was necessary to find refineries that would accept tire pyrolysis oil as a raw material so this would be commercially successful.

The move comes after the Austrian firm earlier presented its innovative way of tire recycling that seeks to recycle rubber from tires into solid carbon, also known as recovered carbon black. Alternatively, the method allows getting a hydrocarbon mixture like pyrolysis oil and gas. Apart from commercial application of recycled products, the process is of value as it is totally in line with circular economy’s principles and it does not require external energy sources.

In tire recycling, one can create different types of output depending on production technology. From each output type, several applications can be produced, hence different industries and markets can be targeted. Currently, there is a wide range of products that can be developed via tire recycling. However, to significantly increase profits, R&D activities prove to be an integral part of tire recycling. Success of products on the market largely depends on the regions where they are sold.

Focus of tire pyrolysis and fuel quality enhancement Pavol Fehér worked on all aspects of thermal conversion of waste materials: from feedstock preparation to end products in R&D projects at Slovnaft Refinery and MOL Group. He researched treatment feasibility of waste materials, particularly waste tires and plastics, and worked with technologies designed to improve pyrolytic fuels.

Oil makes up approximately 35-45% of pyrolysis output depending on process conditions. Recovered fuel oil consists of three fractions with the middle fraction prevailing and it cannot be considered a substitute for traditional fuels before purification and sometimes additional treatment. Width of application of tire-derived pyrolysis oil depends on regulations in particular countries where a project is carried out. In countries with strict environmental protection regulations pyrolysis oil may require additional treatment and refinement, which in turn will increase production costs and lower profit margins.
