The Canadian tire recycler Nexxsource Recycling has been transformed last November into a new company that received a name Evolve Recycling and is now headquartered in Ontario after it was purchased by North West Rubber and Moose Creek Tire Recycling. Additionally, Trillium MC Inc., MCTR’s tire hauling subsidiary has become part of the new firm.

An award-winning innovation method for tire recycling is crumb rubber devulcanization. The original process was developed by a scholar whose innovation was commercialized by Tyromer Inc. – the Canadian company founded by a national university. What makes devulcanization stand out is the fact that it does not require the application of any chemical solvents. Moreover, Tyromer’s process helps reuse waste tire rubber in new tires and in retreads – this was hardly possible before.

Annually, New Zealand generates 5 million scrap tires and the biggest part of them end up at landfills or as waste export. To solve the problem, a company Eneform has developed a low emissions system that has the recycling capacity of 1.5 million scrap tires per year. Currently, the firm seeks expansion within the country and wants to upgrade its recycling capacity up to 5 million tires per annum. To develop its new system, Eneform relied on traditional pyrolisys and transformed it so the company could run a cost-efficient tire recycling plant. Southern Cross Engineering, Petrotec and Hineuru Holdings helped Eneform develop the innovative tire recycling facility.

Starting from January 1, 2019, new scrap tire legislation will come into force in Canada’s Ontario. However, the regional authorities are now concerned that not all tire producers are aware of new laws, thus they won’t be able to comply with them. The new legislation outlining expanded recycling duties of tire producers, the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, comes after it was passed two years ago, and it will replace local Waste Diversion Act and Ontario Tire Stewardship. The former managed to successfully implement waste control strategies and find markets for end-of-life tires, stressed John Armiento of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

The move comes after the Austrian firm earlier presented its innovative way of tire recycling that seeks to recycle rubber from tires into solid carbon, also known as recovered carbon black. Alternatively, the method allows getting a hydrocarbon mixture like pyrolysis oil and gas. Apart from commercial application of recycled products, the process is of value as it is totally in line with circular economy’s principles and it does not require external energy sources.

A Dutch company Black Bear is ready to advance its tire recycling process transforming tires into carbon black, and it managed to receive additional funding of €5 million; the recent growth capital follows prior funding of €11million. The most recent sum became available thanks to a venture capital company from Belgium Capricorn Venture Partners and Particon that provides investment to innovators in tech. Following this investment, the overall financing has managed to reach €16 million.

In tire recycling, one can create different types of output depending on production technology. From each output type, several applications can be produced, hence different industries and markets can be targeted. Currently, there is a wide range of products that can be developed via tire recycling. However, to significantly increase profits, R&D activities prove to be an integral part of tire recycling. Success of products on the market largely depends on the regions where they are sold.

BTRC asserts it has found not just commercially viable, but a highly-profitable solution to tackle the global issue.
