When we talk about products derived from tire recycling, we often imply crumb rubber or fine rubber powder. The former is the most common material, while the latter – one of the most expensive products of tire recycling. Yet there is another alternative, cheaper in value, but having promising market opportunities – tire-derived rubber mulch. Rubber mulch from scrap tires is produced in the initial stages of recycling process when input material is shredded several times and separated from steel wires. This yields a thin product of homogenous size, approximately 50 mm long which can be vastly used in landscaping. Below, we describe several ways of how tire-derived rubber mulch can be used.

The owner of a Malaysian unsanctioned tire recycling plant at Pasir Gudang has been charged under Section 34B of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 in mid-March for polluting the Sungai Kim Kim area and being responsible for chemical poisoning among people who inhaled the hazardous fumes. As a result of his actions and the plant’s operation, around 500 people, including students, had to receive medical treatment after waste dumping that took place early March. The poisoning made some of the victims faint and struggle from breathing problems.

Swedish tire pyrolysis equipment manufacturer and tire recycler Scandinavian Enviro Systems has presented its new forecast for recovered carbon black (rCB) market which is expected to reach over $490 million by 2023. This can be explained by a projected demand growth for recovered carbon black and certified carbon black produced by Enviro; the materials are expected to see demand increase due to a deficit of virgin carbon black.

ELDAN reports that it has many interesting internal and external projects in the pipeline for 2019. “We predict that 2019 will be a very good year for ELDAN and the recycling industry in general. The interest in tyre and cable recycling equipment will continue to increase. In addition to 2018, we also see a large increase in the demand for WEEE/e-waste recycling equipment. We are currently developing small capacity WEEE recycling lines to meet regional requests.” comments Dr. Reftman. “At the moment, the production team in Denmark is working full speed to deliver orders for customers. To meet the heavy increase in orders, we are planning to expand the production facility there.”

To handle waste such as scrap tires, sometimes one may want to seek an alternative to recycling – tire pyrolysis. This process involves decomposing of car tires by incinerating them at a high temperature at the same time removing oxygen. Via this method, it is possible to obtain gas, oil and alternative charcoal known as biochar or recovered carbon black (rCB) – the recycled materials will be applied to produce new goods and generate energy.

George Monbiot, a columnist for The Guardian stated that Britain was avoiding tire recycling in the country and was sending instead huge cargos of scrap tires to India. Enviro – a renowned tire pyrolysis equipment manufacturer who targets recovered carbon black and fuel oil – reports that its pyrolysis technology is in high demand in the North American market. The company currently has active memorandums of understanding (MoU’s) with three different parties in the tire recycling industry, as well as ongoing discussions with additional interested parties. CEO Thomas Sörensson and the Enviro team recently returned home from the US where they visited, among others, partners in the states of New York and Texas where recycling plants are planned to be built. “There are several reasons why we are more active than ever in North America. The market’s need for carbon black is expected to increase as the establishment of virgin production is becoming increasingly difficult due to stricter regulations and penalties, implemented to overcome the environmental problems created by the existing carbon black production”, says Thomas Sörensson.

The Latin American & Caribbean Tyre Expo 2019 that takes place in Panama will be held earlier than previously arranged – on June 26-28, after Panama’s new convention center, Amador, has failed to meet construction deadlines. Latin Expo Group L.L.C also warned that even though it was earlier advertised that the event is scheduled to take place simultaneously with the Latin Auto Parts Expo, these plans had been canceled with the latter being rescheduled for July 17-19. The Atlapa Convention Center will serve as a venue where the expo will be hosted.

Tire Business magazine reports that internationally known recovered carbon black (rCB) supplier Pyrolyx A.G. has made a series of moves to build up its still nascent U.S. operations ahead of moving its headquarters to facilities under construction in Terre Haute, Indiana. In the U.S., Pyrolyx said it has secured additional debt funding of $4.5 million and agreed to buy the assets of tire recycling business J&R Used Tire Service Inc., which is setting up a tire-shredding facility in Newport, Ind., primarily to supply feedstock to Pyrolyx. The purchase agreement is valued at $4.5 million.
