Tyrecycle and Fenner Conveyors have won the Closing the Loop Award at the 2026 WasteSorted WA Awards for their InfinitySeries partnership, which converts end-of-life mining conveyor belts into material for new conveyor belts. The initiative has already diverted more than 4,000 tonnes of used conveyor belts from landfill, with recovered material incorporated into Fenner’s InfinitySeries products at a minimum recycled content of 10%. The project demonstrates a closed-loop approach to a difficult industrial waste stream that has traditionally had limited alternatives to landfill or long-term stockpiling. By recovering rubber and other materials from used conveyor belts and returning them to manufacturing, the partnership supports circular economy objectives in Australia’s mining sector and shows how industrial recycling can move beyond disposal toward direct material reuse in new products.

The Mining Cleantech Challenge is a product-innovation showcase that connects technology providers with mining companies, investors and suppliers. The Australian federal and Western Australian Labor governments are co-investing AUD $44.1 million in nine recycling projects to enhance waste management across Perth and regional Western Australia. These projects will divert 143,000 tonnes of waste from landfills annually and create 246 jobs. Facilities will recycle plastics, tires, paper, and cardboard into new products, including high-quality plastic pipes. After more than two years of industry-led research and consultation, Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) has published its report into the use, recovery, and recycling of Australia’s off-the-road tires, conveyors, and tracks (OTR rubber products). According to TSA, OTR rubber products are critical for the Australian economy. Up to 245,000 tonnes are used and become waste each year, with around 80% of this coming from the mining sector and 10% from agriculture. Regrettably, the vast majority is buried on site, stockpiled, or sent to landfill.

Gradeall – a manufacturer of innovative tire baling and recycling equipment from Nothern Ireland – have been increasingly exporting their range of tire balers, shredders and conveyors to tire recycling operations based throughout the U.S. The United States is one of the largest contributors of waste tires, with over 279 million scrap tires generated annually. Given the negative environmental impact that scrap tires can cause, there is a global push to combat this problem and develop more appropriate waste tire management solutions.

Over one million tonnes of industrial tires that are approaching the end of their useful lives are then buried on mine sites as a result of intensive use, creating environmental and operational challenges for mine operators. Circular Rubber Technologies (CRT) has developed a chemical-free devulcanization process that transforms one of the mining industry’s largest waste streams into a new valuable material. Their Rubber Reclaim product will be used to create new tires, significantly reducing the amount of virgin rubber demand and rubber ending up in landfills.
