Decades of partnership between Liberty Tire Recycling - a prominent nation-wide network of tire recycling facilities in the United States – and Walmart demonstrate a prime example of circularity. Liberty Tire Recycling reports that the tires they collect from Walmart and Sam's Club Service Centers are repurposed into recycled rubber products, like rubber mulch and garden edging, that go right back onto shelves at those stores.

This week, Tyrecycle's recycling facility in East Rockingham, located 40 kilometers south of Perth, received its first delivery of off-the-road (OTR) tyres from Alcoa’s mining operations.

Evonik wants to help make rubber materials from scrap tires easier to re-use in the manufacture of new automobile tires. So far, the suitability of recycled rubber has been very limited because its chemical structure hampers interaction with new tire materials. A team of researchers at Evonik has now made a key step forward with a process that could make it possible to use up to four times as much recycled rubber in new tires as in the past.

Before used tires from millions of road users in BC reach the end of their life, Tire Stewardship BC collects them across the province. Every tire is transported to the processing plant in Delta, BC. This local initiative has prevented tons of rubber from ending up in landfills since 1991, managing the recycling of about 5.5 million car tire equivalents each year.

On the heels of its November 2023 commitment to gather information on the common tire additive 6PPD - and its chemical by-product 6PPD-quinone – that could be used to inform a subsequent regulatory action, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today the publication of a draft testing method (EPA Method 1634) that will enable government agencies, Tribes, and other groups to determine where and when 6PPD-quinone is present in local stormwater and surface waters. The 6PPD-quinone draft method is now available at https://www.epa.gov/cwa-methods. “We heard from the Tribes and other governmental agencies that one of the highest priorities for the agency should be the rapid development of a test for 6PPD-quinone,” said Casey Sixkiller, Regional Administrator of the agency’s Region 10 office in Seattle.

According to Wastefront’s latest press release, the company will achieve significantly higher CO2 reductions than anticipated, following an updated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) by independent expert DNV. Wastefront’s Port of Sunderland plant was already considered a climate milestone for handling end-of-life tyres (ELTs), a significantly under-reported source of pollution. Following DNV’s new assessment – covering construction, operation, and decommissioning – the plant’s environmental benefits are now even more pronounced than before. The top-line environmental improvements include:
