New Zealand is set to trial its first rubber-modified asphalt road surface, marking a notable development in the country’s efforts to find higher-value applications for end-of-life tyres. According to Radio New Zealand, the Selwyn District Council in Canterbury is planning a trial section in Glentunnel on State Highway 77, with work expected to begin in early 2026. The initiative forms part of the council’s wider exploration of innovative materials and construction methods to improve road performance and long-term resilience.

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), in collaboration with the Tire Recycling Foundation, today announced the launch of a webinar series designed to accelerate the growth of scalable, profitable end-use markets for End-of-Life Tires (ELT). The series entitled “The Road to 100% Tire Circularity: ELTs Going Full Circle” will kick off in September and run through early 2026, covering three of the most promising ELT markets – tire-derived aggregate (TDA), molded and extruded products, and rubber-modified asphalt (RMA) – followed by a capstone session on grants and funding opportunities to support market growth.

In 2024, SIGNUS managed a total of 222,406 tonnes of end-of-life tires (ELTs). Based on an average passenger tire weight of 8.1 kg, this equates to approximately 27,337,351 tires — enough to construct around 1,139 racetracks the size of the Jerez Circuit. Of the total volume collected, 12.5% was prepared for reuse as second-hand or retreaded tires. Nearly half (48.5%) was recycled into products for various applications, while the remaining 39% was used for energy recovery, mainly as a substitute for fossil fuels.
