This January, ferrous scrap prices rose up again. Last two month before the new year the price had been going up and January follows the same trend – the price has been bouncing back from a steep and unexpected drop that affected ferrous scrap in September and October of the last year.American Metal Market (AMM) indicates in their price surveys and indices that the most popular ferrous scrap grades’ prices appreciated from some USD 35 to USD 40 per ton in the beginning of January. In November 2016, Midwest Index prices appreciated up to USD 25 per ton and in December 2016 they went up to USD 45 per ton. In the beginning of 2017, export price climbed up less vigorously, according to the survey by AMM. Grades of heavy melting steel (HMS) purchased by brokers from overseas and foreign mill buyers increased by less than USD 12 per ton on the West Coast and by some USD 18 per ton on the East Coast.

The innovation forum "Scrap Tire Recycling" (AZuR) sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany recently published a large-scale study for its partners. The study is focused on the market positions and requirements of end-of-life tire recyclers and manufacturers of products from recycled tire rubber. The German AZuR (Allianz Zukunft Reifen – “German Tyre Future”) – an organization engaging in the design of end-of-life tire management practices – has initiated a study on end-of-life tires in the country. From retreading to tire pyrolysis, the research by AZuR will examine at different components of end-of-life tire value chain, including tire collection and recycling. The goal is to discover the actual facts pertaining to the reality of waste tire management.

SLTC – The Latin American Society of Rubber Technology (The Sociedad Latinoamericana de Tecnología del Caucho) – recently proudly announced the launch of their new Recycling Committee. SLTC highlighted its organizational scheme and general objectives, which we describe below. According to the SLTC, the Recycling Committee was born out of the need to find a place where all stakeholders related to tire recycling in Latin America can actively interact to enrich and develop the industry.

One of the milestones of the new year for AZuR is the establishment of a new, interdisciplinary project group. The fourth AZuR project group, initially consisting of 11 partners under the leadership of Martin von Wolfersdorff, aims to generate fresh ideas for the chemical recycling of used tires. Interdisciplinary AZuR project groups are intended to advance innovative recycling methods for used tires. Currently, there are already project groups focusing on retreading, material recycling of used tires, and rubberized asphalt. The composition of these groups, with partners from industry, trade, and academia, is chosen to incorporate as many relevant aspects and perspectives on a topic as possible.
