MC Pyrolysis introduced a continuous screw pyrolysis plant designed for the recycling of end-of-life tires and rubber waste, highlighting a reactor concept that had already been operating at industrial scale in China for several years. The system was developed around a 27-meter screw reactor intended to support continuous processing rather than batch operation, addressing some of the operational constraints traditionally associated with tire pyrolysis.

Pyrum Innovations AG ("Pyrum"), a pioneer in the sustainable recycling of end-of-life tires based on its patented pyrolysis technology, has received the first delivery of end-of-life bicycle tires by Ralf Bohle GmbH in connection with the planned cooperation of both companies. With its Schwalbe brand and a turnover of EUR 225 million (2020), Ralf Bohle GmbH ("Bohle") is Europe's market leader for bicycle tires and inner tubes. In September, Pyrum and Bohle had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the objective of which is the long-term operation, expansion and further development of a feedstock recycling system for end-of-life bicycle tires by means of pyrolysis. At the same time, the aim is to use the recovered carbon black (rCB) resulting from the recycling of end-of-life tires as an ecological secondary raw material in the production of new Schwalbe products.

ELTs make up nearly 2% of the total global waste, and an estimated one billion ELTs are discarded yearly. This waste flow is growing dramatically year after year. But businesses follow circular economy principles, they begin to view this trash as an opportunity. Through chemical pyrolysis, ELTs can be broken down into reusable commodities like recovered Carbon Black, recovered Pyrolysis Oil, and recovered Steel.

As reported by the European Ruber Journal, Farrel Pomini expanded its investment in UK-based waste tire pyrolysis specialist WF Recycle-Tech, securing majority ownership and strengthening ties between the two companies. The move marked a significant step in scaling pyrolysis-based tire recycling technologies globally.

Lummus Technology, a global provider of process technologies and value-driven energy solutions, and InnoVent Renewables announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work toward licensing and deploying InnoVent’s continuous tire pyrolysis technology globally. “This is another significant step in expanding and strengthening our portfolio for the circular economy,” said Leon de Bruyn, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lummus Technology.

LD Carbon, a resource recycling startup founded in 2017, has opened Korea’s first and largest end-of-life tire (ELT) pyrolysis facility in Dangjin. Every year, South Korea generates approximately 400,000 tons of ELTs, creating significant waste management challenges. Unlike conventional methods, LD Carbon uses advanced technology to transform pyrolysis byproducts into recovered carbon black (rCB), used in the production of new tires.

For more than a decade, the European tire pyrolysis sector has lived with a paradox. Technically, pyrolysis (or pyrolysis) of end-of-life tires (ELTs) has demonstrated its ability to recover valuable hydrocarbons and return them to the chemical value chain. Legally, however, the main product – tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) – often remained burdened with the classification of “waste,” even when it was demonstrably used as a substitute for fossil feedstocks in petrochemical applications. This legal ambiguity has been one of the central barriers to industrial scale-up, financing, and long-term offtake agreements.

HANWA THAILAND CO., LTD., a subsidiary of HANWA CO., LTD., has made a partial investment in PYRO ENERGIE CO., LTD., a tire pyrolysis recycling company based in Thailand. Globally, large volumes of end-of-life tires and off-spec products from tire manufacturing continue to pose environmental challenges, including illegal dumping and landfilling. While HANWA Group currently supplies tire chips as a low-impact energy source to industrial users in Japan, pyrolysis has become a leading recycling method in international markets.

Prismore Capital, BDI-BioEnergy International GmbH, and JR New Horizons (the investment arm of the Rieckermann Group) have joined forces to acquire Grupo BB&G’s advanced tire pyrolysis technology. The acquisition includes patents, operational know-how, a demonstration plant located in Portugal, and an existing collaboration with major industry players, including Bridgestone EMEA and Versalis (ENI).
