A collaborative effort is underway, uniting companies and professionals across tire manufacturing, retailing, and recycling industries, as they seek a substantial grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The objective is to create a comprehensive system for generating Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for all recycled tire products originating from tire recycling processes. Led by the United States Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) and the Tire Industry Association Scrap Tire Research and Education Foundation (TIA STREF), this collective initiative is focused on advancing sustainability practices within the tire industry.

The British bicycle magazine BikeBiz reports that the National Bicycle Tyre Recycling Scheme in the UK now grew to 200 collection sites (“Velorim Centres”), across England, Scotland and Wales. The scheme is targeting 1,000 collection points by the end of 2021, the magazine says. Bike shops, hire-schemes, bike repair centres and retailers across the UK have signed up to recycle all their scrap tires and inner tubes with Velorim. Velorim CEO Dave Hawthorn stated: “We are truly delighted that such a large proportion of the cycle trade has embraced the scheme so enthusiastically. It is important though, that as many as possible do their part by joining the scheme, particularly as much of the down-stream recycling and reprocessing operations are volume-dependent. The more tires we collect – the more sustainable the whole scheme becomes.”

Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) is planning to build a Pyrum pyrolysis plant in the Czech Republic together with a Czech energy company. A corresponding consulting contract was signed with a subsidiary of the group of companies in order to prepare the approval for the construction of the tire recycling plant and to submit the building application. The new plant with a capacity of 20,000 tons of used tires per year is being built in the Czech border region with Germany and is scheduled to start operations in 2025.

Pennsylvania-based rubber flooring manufacturer Ecore International plans to invest $25.5 million to open a regional manufacturing facility in Ozark, Alabama, where it will create 84 jobs. Ecore specializes in transforming reclaimed materials into high-performance flooring and surface products. The privately held company based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is the largest converter of reclaimed rubber in North America, and its largest raw material is scrap truck tires.

Before finding his passion in tire recycling and producing art pieces from end-of-life tires, Abdel Ghafour worked 4 years in the telecommunication sector. This month, Karl Kurz – the person who established the company and brought it to success, retired from the company. Spending 65 years in the industry, Karl Kurz built a company which is one of the most recognized tire casing and tire recyclers in Germany.

ShredderTire claims that its rooftop assembly and blocks that are produced under the label Echo-System significantly alter the industry as they can substitute lumber blocking. The company says that their products, Echo Blocks, are more environment-friendly as they rely on recycled scrap tires. The products made from recycled tires compete with wood and can be installed much faster and easier, according to ShreddedTire.
