The move comes after the Austrian firm earlier presented its innovative way of tire recycling that seeks to recycle rubber from tires into solid carbon, also known as recovered carbon black. Apart from commercial application of recycled products, the process is of value as it is totally in line with circular economy’s principles and it does not require external energy sources.

Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) – the end-of-life tire management authority designing programs and regulations for tire recycling and material recovery in the country – is inviting innovators to help improve the recovery of large off-the-road (OTR) tires once they reach end of life. Around 120,000 tons of end-of-life OTR tires are sent to landfill every year. These tires are used in some of Australia’s most important industries: mining, agriculture, construction, manufacturing and aviation. At end of life, less than 15% of these tires are recovered and then recycled for use as a new resource, the remainder are stockpiled, buried onsite or sent to landfill.

A scrap tire collector Credential Environmental Limited (CEL) produced over 250,000 tons of tire derived fuel (TDF) and tire derived aggregate (TDA) thanks to CM Shredders technology, Robert Taylor, Site Manager for Credential Environmental stated this month in a letter addressed to the staff of the CM Shredders. In that message, the manager praised the machinery provided by CM and stressed that his company was happy about the quality and reliability of CM’s products. The recent news from Continental – a prominent tire manufacturer – proves that the industry is expected to becoming more sustainable which, in turn, will affect tire recycling industry as well. In late June 2020, Continental received the Red Dot Design Award for Urban Taraxagum – bicycle tires made from dandelion rubber. Moreover, the tire manufacturer recently made a very positive announcement related to sustainability. Now that Claus Petschick heads new Sustainability department, sustainable management is expected to become an integral part of Continental’s “Vision 2030” strategy program. Besides, the company will continue engaging in consistent research and development of new technologies, alternative materials and environmentally friendly production processes in the tire sector.
