As per the latest press release by Nokian Tyres, the company has made a long-term purchase agreement with a tire recycling joint venture. The agreement will help Nokian Tyres reach one of its key sustainability targets, which is to increase the share of recycled and renewable raw materials in tires to 50% by 2030. Nokian Tyres started to use recovered carbon black in a commercial product line in 2022. The long-term purchase agreement with a tire recycling joint venture enables its increased utilization in tires accelerating circularity and sustainability in the tire industry.

The European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC) – the umbrella organization for European Recycling Industries – has been holding a series of webinars “Recyclers’ Talks” aimed at, among other important topics, end-of-life tire recycling and pyrolysis. On October 5, 2021, EuRIC is holding another webinar called “End-of-Waste: Time to Move Forward”. Among other topics, the webinar will shed light of end-of-life tire management issues and practices, presented by the European Tire and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association.

The World Economic Forum recently published an article about a Kuwaiti company EPSCO, who is committed to solve the country’s end-of-life tire stockpiling problem. Before EPSCO launched its first tire recycling plant in 2020, Weibold supported the company with the market research for recycled tire-derived products. According to the World Economic Forum, EPSCO Global General Trading has a plant that recycles used tires and turns them into consumer goods. The facility has the capacity to recycle up to 3 million tires per year. This operation is crucial in addressing Kuwait's trash problem, which has been dubbed the "tire graveyard."

Qatar is now attempting to advance the reuse of scrap tire rubber in order to stop tire incineration – when scrap tires are burnt and not recycled, they generate CO2 emissions. Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) represented by the state program Tarsheed is behind the new sustainable effort. Kahramaa’s aim is to cut CO2 emission by 7 percent in 3 years. To attain this objective, the organization will encourage the locals to start actively reusing tires in decorative art works and installations and in sports.

One of the most colorful personalities in the tire recycling and pyrolysis world – Dr. Valerie Shulman – recently passed away after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Shulman made an enormous contribution to our industry and we are very sad for our loss. We would like to express sincere condolences to Dr. Shulman’s family and remind to our audience about how Dr. Shulman was supporting and developing our industry. As a Secretary General of the European Tyre Recycling Association (ETRA) for over 30 years, for many Dr. Shulman was the face and voice of the Association. As Secretary General of ETRA, she helped defend interests of European tire recyclers in the highest offices in the European Commission, fighting for the future of the industry.
