According to the article by ABC News Australia, Gunnedah Basin mining giant Whitehaven Coal (WHC) is planning to bury hundreds of used heavy-machinery tires on its Tarrawonga Coal Mine site in north-west New South Wales. ABC reports that while the mine, located within the boundary of the Leard State Forest, is expected to close by 2028, WHC wants to bury some 730 tires on the site. Reportedly, it sits within the boundaries of the Leard State Forest and has been earmarked for revegetation. Landholders say it would be an offense if they did the same thing.

Chile's Ministry of Environment published the first decree linked to Law 20,920 in January 2021, which states that by 2030, all tires on mining trucks with 45-inch or larger tires must be recycled 100 percent. The gradual implementation of tire recycling in mining must start in 2023.

Novum Energy Australia managing director Rowan Kendall said the company’s target was to process 19,000 tons of rubber per annum. This would produce approximately nine million liters of fuel oil, 4500 ton of recycled carbon black, 2500 tons of waste steel and excess syngas for electricity generation. The mining company Anglo American is moving towards a sustainable “zero-waste future” at its five metallurgical coal operations in central Queensland, Australia, through a new collaboration with Novum Energy Australia that will see rubber waste products transformed into usable raw materials. According to the source, end-of-life mining truck tires and conveyor belts from the mine sites will be supplied to Novum, who will convert the rubber into industrial products including heavy and light pyrolysis oils, recovered carbon black, syngas and steel.

The Group has its tire retreading plant — annually, the plant turns back to life some 200,000 tires of various types and makes OTR retreads. The corporation also looks for the ways to boost retread sale. For instance, Grupo Soledad tries to do so by teaming up with Continental that sends all its casing to the group’s site at Aspe, so the two can produce quality retreads.
