Canadian mining company Teck is advancing its environmental efforts by recycling industrial waste to enhance paved surfaces and reduce waste. A pilot project at Teck's Trail Operations and Neptune Terminals in British Columbia is exploring the use of recycled rubber from haul truck tires in asphalt. This initiative aims to divert thousands of tonnes of waste tires from landfills and improve road quality.

Despite hard efforts of the tire recycling and pyrolysis industry to develop new markets and increase recycling rates, recycled rubber based product markets demonstrate only moderate growth. To tackle the problem and allow thousands of tons of precious materials go back to consumer goods, numerous end-of-life tire management organizations, companies and research labs do their best to find new markets and develop innovative products out of scrap tire rubber.

A student from Mexico has created a self-repairing asphalt made out of recycled rubber from scrap tires and special additives, which help asphalt escape damage caused by rainwater. Moreover, rain would result in repairing roads as it would serve as a recovery agent, according to the innovation inventor, The Coahuila Autonomous University student Israel Antonio Briseño Carmona. The self-repairing pavement material created by Carmona mostly consists of end-of-life tires, thus, it is probably the first type of asphalt with recycled tire rubber that can, reportedly, handle damage caused by water, such as cracks and potholes, in the long term.

SUMO Innovations – a European company specialized in chemical modification of rubber powder for industrial applications – forecasts record-high sales for the end of 2019. According to the company’s recent statement, SUMO Innovations has replaced more than 1000 tons of SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) in polymer-modified-bitumen roofing membranes in Europe. SUMO says that this allowed roofing membrane manufacturers to significantly reduce raw material costs and further demonstrate their commitment to environment-friendly products and green production processes. SUMO can replace 25% of SBS in membranes keeping same performance. The company pinpoints that, in parallel with benefits such as cost reduction and quality enhancement, SUMO products help manufacturers significantly cut CO2 emissions.

On the 6th of February, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) announced opening a committee which will develop standards for the recovered carbon black (rCB). The goal of the ASTM’s new committee D36 will be to establish and update standards in end-of-life tire (ELT) and scrap rubber decomposition, standards in material characteristics and sustainability. ASTM declared that the committee will be formed and governed by the members of its existing committee on carbon black (D24) who engaged in working with a vast portfolio of standards on recycled carbon black goods.

RMIT University engineers collaborated with Tyre Stewardship Australia to discover the perfect blend that is both UV-resistant and withstands traffic loads, with the potential to save governments millions on road maintenance annually.

In an Australian first, Ararat Rural City Council has tested new road sealing technology using a circular road solution to enhance road efficiency within the community. This innovative method uses recycled tire rubber as a modifier for bitumen binder and a substitute for traditional aggregates, significantly advancing sustainable road construction practices. This approach could increase the use of waste tires on rural roads by tenfold.
