In Gaza, where the Israeli blockade has created significant challenges, a 27-year-old Palestinian named Madian Helles has initiated a car tire recycling project to address environmental concerns. In Gaza, the disposal of car tires is problematic due to their slow decomposition and the absence of recycling initiatives. Inspired to find a solution to these environmental issues, Helles launched his project. The tire recycling process involves several stages. Helles collects used tires using mobile carts and uses a machine he assembled to cut, slice, chop, grind, and sort the tires to remove impurities, threads, and fibers.

Swedish Tire Recycler Association, SDAB or Svensk Däckåtervinning AB, together with the social research and data analytics agency Kantar Public, has mapped what the Swedish public's knowledge of tire recycling looks like. SDAB collaborated with Kantar Public to conduct a survey to gain a better understanding of the Swedish public's knowledge regarding tire recycling, from collection to areas of use. The survey was done via a nationally representative and randomly recruited online panel, the Sifo panel, with 1,000 participants from the Swedish public aged 18-79.

According to County Executive Jimmy Haley, the existing location where Warren County recycles tires has increased its cost by 40%. This was announced in an APM’s recent press release from December 2, 2021. Studies have shown that recycling tires helps reduce the effects of harmful chemicals on the environment. Recycling also prevents tires from becoming breeding grounds for disease-carrying pests such as malaria mosquitoes. The company is running a pilot project with a Nigerian recycling facility, Freetown Waste Management Recycle Limited, to use the paving blocks at the terminal and potentially recycle the terminals own used tires in the future. Following the pilot the sustainability of the solution will be evaluated.

Van Dyck, affiliated with the tire recycler Mathe Group, has achieved Global GreenTag certification for its rubber flooring products, marking a milestone in sustainable manufacturing. The certification is particularly significant given Van Dyck's connection to the tire recycling industry, as the company produces rubber flooring from recycled materials, including those derived from end-of-life tires.

End-of-life tires (ELT) are a valuable resource for the circular economy. Of course, natural rubber is important, but it only makes up roughly a fifth of a passenger vehicle's tire. Synthetic polymers, steel, and textiles all play a role in the process.
