A final order to liquidate the Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (Redisa) – a body responsible for tire collection and tire recycling – issued two years ago has been repealed by the South African Supreme Court of Appeal following numerous allegations that the project was involved in corrupt schemes. Prior to reaching the verdict, the judges had a dispute as the majority claimed that there was no just reason for the environmental affairs minister Edna Molewa to bring the case to court due to lacking evidence that Redisa’s directors and the initiative’s ally Kusaga Taka Consulting (KT) conducted any violations.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems AB (Enviro) is once again nominated at the Recircle Awards, this year in the Tyre Pyrolysis Award category. Wastefront AS – a Norwegian waste tire recycling company – in collaboration with leading Swedish chemical engineering company Hulteberg Chemistry & Engineering AB – announced that it has been awarded a €2 million grant from Eureka Eurostars, the world’s largest funding-program for business collaborations in creating innovative products for commercialisation, and the Norwegian Research Council and the Swedish Innovation Agency. The total project-funding amounts to €2.076 million: €1.038 million from Eurostars and €1.038 million from project partners.

Specifically, recovered Carbon Black (rCB) and Tire Pyrolysis Oil (TPO), obtained through thermolysis processes from used tires, should be classified as valuable secondary products rather than waste. The lack of harmonization between the EU Waste Framework Directive and the EU Chemicals Regulation REACH could otherwise spell the end of chemical circular economy initiatives for used tires.

Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) – a pioneer in the sustainable recycling of end-of-life tires (ELT) based on its pyrolysis technology – filed an application for a secondary listing in the Scale segment with Deutsche Börse AG in Frankfurt.

On February 7, the joint venture between Scandinavian Enviro Systems (publ) (Enviro), Michelin and Antin Infrastructure Partners made the final investment decision regarding the construction of the end of life tire recycling plant in Uddevalla, Sweden. The joint venture has secured equity financing for the construction of the plant and signed multi-year agreements for the supply of end-of-life tires and offtakes for the recovered carbon black and oil products. The signed agreements regarding deliveries of recovered materials have a total value of approximately MEUR 180 (SEK 2 billion) over the contract period, which varies between 5 and 10 years.
