sustainability

January 10, 2023

The Yokohama Rubber Co. announced that it will supply ADVAN racing tires with a sustainable material content as the control tire for the Japanese Super Formula Championship from the 2023 season. The company has completed development of tires for use in dry conditions and will continue developing tires for wet conditions with the aim of supplying them from 2023. The dry condition tires being supplied by Yokohama Rubber use natural rubber and various naturally derived compounding agents including oil produced from oil palm nuts and orange peels, as well as recycled iron, rubber recycled from waste tires, and synthetic rubber produced using the mass balance method – a method that allows you to label a commercial product as a biomass-derived product based on the volume of biomass-derived raw materials used during the process of turning raw materials into final products and the distribution process.

Goodyear introduced 90% sustainable-material demonstration tire

Innovations

January 5, 2023

After announcing the capability to demonstrate a 70% sustainable-material tire in January 2022, Goodyear, – one of the world's largest tire companies – working with its supply base, plans to sell a tire with up to 70% sustainable-material content in 2023. On January 4, Goodyear unveiled a demonstration tire comprised of 90% sustainable materials. This demonstration tire has passed all applicable regulatory testing as well as Goodyear’s internal testing. This demonstration tire also tested to have lower rolling resistance when compared to the reference tire, made with traditional materials. Lower rolling resistance means this demonstration tire has the potential to offer better fuel savings and carbon footprint reduction.

Weibold Academy: "Waste4GreenFuture" by chemical recycling of tires

Weibold Academy: "Waste4GreenFuture" by chemical recycling of tires

Academy

December 30, 2022

Chemical recycling is an emerging theme in waste management which has the potential to contribute to a low carbon, resource efficient and sustainable economy. In enabling the use of carbonaceous waste as secondary carbon feedstock to replace fossil resources to produce organic chemicals, it could support efforts to transit carbon intensive industries from the linear to a circular carbon economy. A sustainable society with climate-neutral processes requires significant adjustments in the value chains, which are only possible through innovations. In the “Waste4Future” lighthouse project, seven institutions of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (Germany) are pooling their expertise to develop new solutions for this goal, from the raw material basis to material flows and process engineering to the end of a product’s life cycle. They aim to increase energy and resource efficiency when using plastics and thus pave the way for a chemical industry that requires fewer fossil raw materials and causes fewer emissions.

Continental's tires made of recycled plastic named GALAP Product of the Year 2023

industry updates

December 28, 2022

Continental’s ContiRe.Tex tire was chosen as the GALAP Product of the Year 2023 in the Tire category after competing against 38 other candidates. On Wednesday, December 14, the Award was presented at the Torre Glries in Barcelona. The use of recycled materials in tire manufacture was pioneered by ContiRe.Tex technology, which achieved an 8.2 out of 10 rating from a sample of about 100,000 users. With its ContiRe.Tex technology, which aims to make the manufacturing, use, and recyclability of its tires more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, Continental just got one step closer to the goal of tires made from 100% recycled or sustainable materials. ContiRe.Tex utilizes between 9 to 15 polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles per tire, depending on the tire size.
