Evonik wants to help make rubber materials from scrap tires easier to re-use in the manufacture of new automobile tires. So far, the suitability of recycled rubber has been very limited because its chemical structure hampers interaction with new tire materials. A team of researchers at Evonik has now made a key step forward with a process that could make it possible to use up to four times as much recycled rubber in new tires as in the past.

Gravita India Limited has announced that its step-down subsidiary, Gravita Netherlands BV (GNBV), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to acquire a waste tire recycling plant in Romania. This will mark Gravita's first recycling facility in Europe, with a capacity of approximately 17,000 MTPA. The company already operates 12 state-of-the-art recycling facilities across Asia and Africa, with a total capacity of over 300,000 MTPA in various recycling sectors.

Group CNJ, headquartered in Ahmedabad, India, is investing $3.5 million in a new tire recycling facility in Melbourne, Australia, as part of its global expansion strategy. The new site will be equipped with Fornnax Technology’s advanced shredding equipment, including the SR 150 primary shredder and R4000 secondary shredder, enabling the facility to process 10 tonnes of tires per hour, with an annual capacity of 55,000 tonnes. The plant is expected to be operational by March 2025 and will produce high-quality steel-free rubber chips.

On September 5, Vow ASA announced that its subsidiary Scanship AS has signed a FEED (Front End Engineering Design) contract with Murfitts Industries, a leading end-of-life tire recycling company. This contract represents the latest milestone in a collaborative program between the two companies focused on developing a process to recover and reuse raw materials from end-of-life tires on a commercial scale. One of the primary goals of this initiative is to allow manufacturers to incorporate recovered materials into new tire production, thereby closing the loop in the tire lifecycle.
