Today, more than 80 percent of the carbon backbone that most chemicals are made of is still derived from fossil raw materials. This means that neither the basic chemicals, which are made from petroleum feedstocks, nor the products made from them are sustainable. The load limits, such as climate change, ocean acidification and integrity of the biosphere, are far exceeded by most chemicals. Some chemicals even exceed Earth's exposure limits by more than 100 times. This is the conclusion reached by the University (ETH) in Zurich in a recent study published in the expert journal Green Chemistry (2021, 23, 9881) in which the most produced 490 chemicals have been analysed through the lens of seven planetary boundaries representing critical biophysical limits that should never be exceeded.

Colombians have been encouraged to bring their end-of-life tires to collection stations on "Llantaton" days, which have been designated by the Colombian government to promote tire recycling in the country. Suba and Barrios Unidos have been singled out for special attention on Llantaton Day, which took place on February 25, 2022.

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) says it is now accepting applications for fiscal year 2023 Recycling and Illegal Dumping (RAID) Fund grants for scrap tire management, illegal dumpsite abatement, recycling and composting projects.

In conjunction with the Ministry of Education, the Italian extended producer responsibility (EPR) program for end-of-life tire management Greentire and WeSchool will encourage the recovery of recyclable materials in end-of-life tires. The Green Community, a network of institutions and businesses that works with the Ministry of Education Plan for the ecological and cultural transformation of schools to provide educational activities focused on sustainability, chose the initiative.

The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) announced the launch of its inaugural Industry Leadership Awards program. TRAC’s Industry Leadership Awards recognize outstanding individuals and companies for their dedication and commitment to excellence in the tire and rubber industry, including end-of-life tire management businesses and other businesses focused on sustainability.

Environmentalists have criticized Osnabrück's plans for a city pyrolysis plant. The tire pyrolysis facility would assist the city in removing old tires while also producing energy and raw materials for resale. However, the plans for the Pieswerk project are being challenged by a ProPye group.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) – a Swedish tire pyrolysis equipment manufacturer and operator – reports it has received an order for 60 tons of recovered carbon black from a major European tire manu-facturer in the premium segment. Reportedly, the tire manufacturer will use the carbon black for produc-tion tests as a step in its efforts to increase the proportion of recovered and renewable materials in their tires.

The three day event will take place from Monday through to Wednesday 30 May - 1 June 2022 at LE LOUISE Hotel Brussels. The Conference is the culmination of a year-long series of ETRA-led and supported activities and events that focused on market development and expansion for a broad array of recycled tire materials, products and applications.
