Attempting to support use of alternative energy, Oman made first steps towards converting end-of-life tires to fuel and using them in cement production. Recently, the Oman Environment Holding Company (be'ah) has signed an agreement with Oman Cement to supply TDF – fuels derived from end-of-life tires – to the Oman Cement Company. The agreement was signed by Eng. Tariq bin Ali Al Amri, CEO of be'ah, and Eng. Salem bin Abdullah Al-Hajri, CEO of Oman Cement Company. The memorandum was signed on the February 6 with a number of employees and concerned officials from both sides present at the event.

5.300 tons of tires shredded by Aliapur – French waste tire management authority – were shipped on July 11, 2019 on board the bulk carrier “Notos” from Dunkirk to Dakar. The goal for the waste tire management authority was to supply alternative fuel to the Sococim de Rufisque cement plant in Senegal using the waterway and the sea. Senegal becomes the first country in West Africa to receive tire-derived fuel supplies from Aliapur. It is also the first time that Aliapur operates from Dunkirk, a sea and river port with the capacity to absorb the storage in transit of 5,300 tons of TDF.

CM informs that the demand for tire-derived fuel (TDF) is significantly increasing thanks to its advantages over traditional fuels, such as providing higher heating value than coal or wood. The heat produced from TDF is approximately thirty percent higher than that of coal and more than twice that of wood. TDF also provides lower sulfur oxide emissions when compared with coal, which has a higher sulfur content. Furthermore, combustion of TDF provides better operational consistency than other fuels used in waste-to-energy systems.

Today, tire recycling and cement industries are indeed intertwined. SSI Shredding Systems has supplied equipment to a cement producer in Senegal to shred end-of-life tires, transforming them into tire-derived fuel (TDF) for use in cement kilns. The U.S.-made system, which includes an M120 two-shaft shredder and a trommel screen, provides a cost-effective and space-efficient solution. The trommel screen ensures clean, sheared tire pieces suitable for incineration, helping reduce reliance on coal while lowering costs and carbon emissions.

Geocycle LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Holcim (US) Inc., announced it has acquired CM Rubber Technologies, Inc., in Coleman, Michigan, as part of our ongoing commitment to create a zero waste future and accelerate green growth. The acquisition will allow Geocycle to provide a sustainable waste management solution to Northern Michigan through co-processing used tires to recover energy and divert waste from landfills. Additionally, it will deliver a stable source of lower emissions fuels for the Alpena cement plant, in Alpena, MI, which recently broke ground on a 22,000 ton per year, whole-tire, co-processing line. By early 2023, the Alpena plant will begin to co-process tires from the Geocycle Coleman facility, reducing CO2 emissions and delivering a low-carbon, circular economy model for the region.

Sussan Ley, the Federal Minister for the Environment, has unveiled a new $10 million state-of-the-art tire recycling plant in Western Sydney's Erskine Park. The plant, according to TireCycle CEO Jim Fairweather, will be able to treat the tens of thousands of tons of end-of-life tires that were previously shipped offshore, resulting in adverse environmental effects. "It's a huge win for the environment and Australia's circular economy," Fairweather said, adding that "end-of-life tires will now be given a new lease on life." The facility will recycle end-of-life tires into products such as tire-derived fuel and rubber crumb for use in roads, flooring tiles and sports surfaces. The factory is expected to produce 10,000 tons of rubber crumb and 40,000 tons of tire-derived fuel per year (TDF).
