Well-known New York based US tire shredding equipment manufacturer Columbus McKinnon (also known as CM Shredders) has been purchased by Bengal Machine. To cater for two separate shredding marketplaces, primary and secondary, the company will create two brands specifically targeting each – Tire Shredders and Industrial Shredders. Additionally, the subsidiary Schutte-Buffalo is expected to be remodeled into Schutte Hammermill that will deal with hammer mills and crusher products.

The USTMA along with other organizations such as Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) identifies itself as an advocate for sustainability promoting environmental protection, economic and social development. The association has repeatedly emphasized that it is attempting to advance and support sustainability, including tire recycling practices. According to the recent press release of Eldan Recycling, advances in the market of electrical components enabled Eldan to develop a new shredder – frequency drive Eldan Super Chopper – with a significantly lower power consumption and a remarkably lower price than previous models. The company reports that for more than 20 years the Eldan Super Chopper has been a popular heavy-duty pre-chopper in the tire recycling industry.

A new tire recycling line has been commissioned and installed in Poland by American tire recycling equipment manufacturer CM Shredders. The company says it is the second CM line in Europe intended for tire pyrolysis / gasification industry. CM Shredders (formerly Columbus McKinnon) revealed that its system is capable of manufacturing rubber free of wire, which may be used as a feedstock in tire pyrolysis. In addition, the equipment produces purified steel wire from tires.

Two huge piles with thousands of tires were abandoned in Dickens Street, Peterborough, by a rogue trader and now pose a fire risk threatening railway security and households’ safety in the neighborhood. The railway between Birmingham and Stansted Airport may face closure as a result of the illegal actions of a rogue trader from Huntingdon, Michael Newsome. According to prosecutor for the Environment Agency Gurjit Bdesha, the trader rented a site to carry out tire shredding activities which had never taken place. Instead, the land was used as a tire storage and it accommodated more tires than was officially permitted. Moreover, Newsome’s actions – unsanctioned accumulation of large amounts of scrap tires – created a fire risk. The official also noted that the closest household to the dangerous tire site is only 13 meters away.

The Manitoba authorities have expressed their commitment to ongoing scrap tire recycling initiatives stressing that existing producer responsibility organization Tire Stewardship Manitoba will not be dropped. The provincial tire recycling system relies on producer responsibility organization funded by the industry that assists in various sorts of waste disposal and recycling. In total, Manitoba has 12 similar initiatives.

Oil makes up approximately 35-45% of pyrolysis output depending on process conditions. Recovered fuel oil consists of three fractions with the middle fraction prevailing and it cannot be considered a substitute for traditional fuels before purification and sometimes additional treatment. Width of application of tire-derived pyrolysis oil depends on regulations in particular countries where a project is carried out. In countries with strict environmental protection regulations pyrolysis oil may require additional treatment and refinement, which in turn will increase production costs and lower profit margins.
