Italy’s Olbia handled an environmental problem that posed danger to the environment and human health as over 900 tons of abandoned scrap tires were collected from an industrial area. This became possible thanks to funding and joint efforts of the Municipality of Olbia and a non-for-profit scrap tire managing organization Ecopneus. Additionally, Ecoservice of S.Antonio di Gallura helped the tire removal process. The company serves as Ecopneus’ partner specializing in collection and transportation of scrap tires in the provinces of Sassari, Oristano and Nuoro in Italy.

A number of tests and scientific research in Italy have shown that rubber obtained via tire recycling presents a more comfortable horse-riding experience and offers sustainably improved equestrian arena management. In addition, recycled rubber is more cost-efficient, can protect the horse’s joints and result in less dust in the air compared to conventional flooring with sand, according to the tests.

An Italian product designer Paolo Gentile has embraced the not-so-common application for recycled scrap tires recently. He decided to create skateboards that contain rubber obtained from waste tires. Ecopneus – the Italian end-of-life tire management authority – reports that the new Bicocca Stadium received a completely renovated sports center this summer, a century after it was opened. Bicocca’s sports field received an athletics track equipped with speed sensors, stands and changing rooms completely renovated and managed by CUS Milano. These are the redevelopment projects completed by the University as part of the project designed to promote university sport and the use of the facility by all residents.
