New Zealand’s North Canterbury has a huge end-of-life tire stockpile, which has been attracting public attention over the last years and grew into a big problem. Efforts to clean up the stockpile have picked up pace with two parties who are now in a competition race. Press reports that the tire stockpile has been a concern for the community for more than four years, and it was deliberately set alight in 2018. Both removal bids have Environment Canterbury (ECan) backing. New Zealand’s magazine Stuff reports that “Community-led group Accountability Action was formed in response to a lack of action by authorities and enforcement breaches by the companies responsible for the tires, Tyre Recycling Services New Zealand Ltd and 2016 Tyre Shredding Ltd.”

For many years, tire recycling industry and business worldwide could not design economical solutions to efficiently recycle end-of-life off-the-road (OTR) tires. While OTR tires consist of high-quality natural rubber, one of the challenges in recycling them was transport. Huge size and weight of OTR tires do not allow transporting these tires easily and, as a result, these end-of-life tires used to be buried in quarries and on mining sites. Today, new technologies and innovations in engineering design give us hope that OTR tire recycling will soon become a common practice.

Logan City Council in Queensland, Australia, reports that is has teamed with Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) to conduct trials of a new eco-friendly road surface. According to Logan City Council, the surface is a combination of recycled end-of-life tyres and reclaimed asphalt. Installation of the new surface on Lagoon Road, Carbrook is scheduled for this April. TSA has committed $150,000 to the trial and additional laboratory testing, which aims to prove that the new surface will be as good as, or better than, standard road sealing. The manufacturer reports that the tyre baler conveyor combined with either the MK2 or MK3 tyre baler is the fastest, most user-friendly way to bale large volumes of tyres. Rather than have operators spend valuable time searching for tyres, or walking to a pile of tyres and back to the baler repetitively the conveyor hopper is loaded with tyres via telehandler in a matter of minutes.

Peru has presented a sustainable female fashion shoe brand that relies on recycled end-of-life tire rubber. The company is called EstoyEco (“I’m Eco” in English). Jesselyn Campomanes, CEO and co-founder of EstoyEco commented on the process of shoe making saying that scrap tires are treated during 2 phases – these moves are needed to make soles of the footwear. She noted that normally recyclers deliver scrap tires to the brand’s facility where the end-of-life materials are selected and washed. Tires also undergo process of cutting and tread separation and then plates of shoe soles are manufactured.

A scrap tire collector Credential Environmental Limited (CEL) produced over 250,000 tons of tire derived fuel (TDF) and tire derived aggregate (TDA) thanks to CM Shredders technology, Robert Taylor, Site Manager for Credential Environmental stated this month in a letter addressed to the staff of the CM Shredders. In that message, the manager praised the machinery provided by CM and stressed that his company was happy about the quality and reliability of CM’s products. He added: “CM Shredders was able to provide the most advanced shredding technology and equipment which allows us to sell the best quality rubber in the market.”

On November 13-14, 2019, Weibold’s team attended the biennial Latin American Tire Recycling Conference in Mexico’s Queretaro – a conference uniting industry’s key figures and researchers in the field of end-of-life tire recycling and pyrolysis. This event is considered one of the most important for the tire recycling sector in the region, according to the Latin American Conference official website, and is held as part of the larger XV Latin American Conference on Rubber Technology.

Residents of Montezuma County, Colorado, US, have collected and delivered over 26,000 tires to the region’s landfill amid program aimed at waste clearance and recycling, said landfill manager Mel Jarmon. The collection that involved hundreds of community representatives took place in August and lasted for a week. No charge was applied for tire drop off (normally, a $2.50 fee is charged for a light vehicle tire disposal, and $18.90 is charged per truck tire). According to the site’s manager, the county’s landfill collected more scrap tires that it was anticipated.
