The patented Eagle Punch Cutter II is portable and designed to split Off the Road (OTR) tires into two halves, cutting through the center of the tread. It can handle a range of tire sizes, from a rim size of 39 inches and a tread width of 37 inches up to, and including, rim size of 63 inches and tread width of 70 inches. A blade is used to punch the tire while a programmable logic controller (PLC) controls the rotation of the tire and the punching process, allowing the operator to set the machine, press the start button, and let it run.

Novum Energy Australia managing director Rowan Kendall said the company’s target was to process 19,000 tons of rubber per annum. This would produce approximately nine million liters of fuel oil, 4500 ton of recycled carbon black, 2500 tons of waste steel and excess syngas for electricity generation. According to Kendall, this was an effective way to ensure used tires were being reclaimed in a safe and sustainable manner.

As circular economy concept and tire recycling are becoming more popular all over the world, the first issue that may arise is the need to secure the raw material, namely end-of-life tires (ELT). Normally, tire recycling companies source their feedstock from collection programs or directly from tire stockpiles. Local ELT stockpiles in developing countries eventually may have limited supplies, because if ELT regulations were not in place before, tires may have been simply landfilled or burnt.

According to the manufacturer, the line is capable of coloring up to 10,000 lbs (4,500 kg) of input material per hour. ECO Green pinpoints that the line is designed to color a wide range of material sizes from 10-20 mesh rubber granules, to 1-inch chunks and rubber buffings. According to the recent press release, Energy Estate and InfraCo announced a joint venture “REVYRE” to develop and build innovative tire recycling plants in Australia and New Zealand, utilizing two revolutionary technologies – Vertech / RubberJet Valley tire disintegration and Tyromer rubber devulcanization. The stakeholders say that currently Australia disposes of over 60,000 tons of end-of-life tires (ELTs) by exporting them and approximately 100,000 tons are stockpiled in landfills or stockpiled onsite (predominantly within the mining and agricultural sectors). With the COAG agreed ban on used tire exportation from December 2021 the annual growth in Australia’s tire stockpile will be even greater. New Zealand currently generates 5-6 million ELTs annually which equates to close to 70,000 tons. These units are either shredded locally for domestic burning in cement kilns as Tyre Derived Fuel (TDF) or are baled and exported for use as TDF in Asia, the press release pinpoints.
